Perhaps you have never heard the name before, but Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz is one of the most important representatives of modern music in our neighboring country. Her Concerto for String Orchestra from 1948 reflects the austerity of the post-war years while impressing with intensely resonating sound surfaces in the middle movement. The second violin concerto by Bacewicz's compatriot Henryk Wieniawski, interpreted here by Elias David Moncado, was dedicated to the Spanish violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate in 1870, and one can hear its romantic Mediterranean character. Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 concludes this matinee. The symphony is among the most cheerful compositions that the composer from Bonn ever created. It is a celebration of the resounding classical tradition, a wonderful start to the Sunday.
